Wants versus needs.

This is a topic that many of us have considered our entire lives.

Teachers have taught about it; pastors have preached about it; and parents have spent sleepless nights worrying about the financial struggle between things that are wants and those that are needs. In light of the current pandemic, however, there are very few conversations that seem more important. As families weight their wants of going to seeing older friends and relatives versus the need to stay healthy, this topic takes on a whole new and important light.

And while consumers have long had to struggle with this topic, it is important to note that during these times the logistics of getting consumers what they need has become more complicated. Specifically, when it comes to the use of both new and used trailer resources, understanding how to choose a used reefer trailer is a decision that can literally determine the success or failure of a company.

Just a many factories and manufacturing plants are repurposing their equipment to make personal protection products that are in such high demand, there are also trucking companies that now need to put even more weight on how to choose a used reefer trailer. Realizing that the kind of trailer resources that they buy can expand the types of products that they carry, means that a company can position itself to carry the items that are needed the most today, while also be ready to continue to carry the future wants of the consumer when the economy finally bounces back.

Knowing How to Choose a Used Reefer Is an Important Business Decision for Many Companies

Even before the pandemic, the global refrigerated trailer market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.8% between 2016 and 2022. Now, of course, there is greater speculation about just how important it is to know how to choose a used reefer. And while it might be tempting to think that the only option is to purchase new trailers, the fact of the matter is both the price and availability might mean that used purchases are the best.

For both the delivery of food items and pharmaceutical products, the trucking industry is essential. Calculating how space will be used and being able to alter from carrying one kind of cargo today that is high demand for products that might be in even higher demand tomorrow will allow many companies to succeed, while others fail.
Consider some of these facts and figures about the transportation industry and the effect that it will have on both the future health and economy of the entire nation:

  • The temperature range of a refrigerated trailer is -20 degrees to 70 degrees Fahrenheit, so it is possible to adjust the temperature based on the kind of cargo that is being carried
  • Before the pandemic, the global refrigerated trailer market was expected to reach a market value of $7,658 billion by the year 2022. Speculating on the future of these numbers, of course, is very common as companies position themselves for the delivery of future medicines and vaccines.
  • As many as 500,000 reefer trailers are currently in operation in the U.S. Today it is even more important to understand the role that these trailers play in the health and well bing of the nation.
  • As many as 40,000 refrigerated trailers were ordered in the U.S. in January of 2018 alone, according to FTR Transportation Intelligence. It is likely, however, that the numbers from today and in 2021 will be significantly greater.
  • The average size of a reefer trailer is between 28 and 53 feet in length and no more than 13.5 feet in height. How this space is used, of course, can vary, but as a rule of thumb it is the goal to make sure that as much of the space is used as possible. This often means the coordination of deliveries to many different vendors.
  • Los Angeles, Long Beach, New York/New Jersey, Seattle and Tacoma, and Savannah are the top five U.S. ports.
  • In 2015, the global refrigerated market was valued at slightly more than $5 billion. By 2022, however, that number was expected to increase by another $2 billion.
